- On the next empty pages of your notebook, copy the following, making sure to leave space for your answers. Title these pages Origin of the Universe Writing Organizer.
- Claim: This is a statement that answers the original question or problem. What is your opinion? What do you think? Sentences may say “I believe that___” or “It is my opinion that___.” Write a sentence that states which theory for the origin of the universe is most likely.
- Evidence: This is scientific data that supports the claim and is appropriate and sufficient to support the claim. What support do you have for your opinion? Sentences may say “The data shows ___,” “According to the data___,” or “Evidence from the data demonstrates___.” Provide data that supports your claim about which theory for the origin of the universe is most likely.
Reasoning: This is a justification that connects the evidence to the claim and shows why the data counts as evidence by using appropriate and sufficient scientific principles. Why does your evidence support your claim? Why is what you say true? Why do you think this? Sentences may look like “If___, then___,” “This provides___ because ___,” “This supports my claim because ___,” or “This confirms that ___.” Write a statement that connects your evidence to your claim about which theory is most likely. - Complete this organizer to help you organize your thoughts to write a short essay about how the universe was formed.

In this paper, you are to express you ideas as to how the universe was formed, give evidence to support your claim and finally explain your reasoning. The rubric for the essay is found below. Famous Astronomer Essay
Find a famous astronomer. It can be anyone from the past to the present and write an essay about them in your notebook. In the essay, you should include the following information:
- Who is the scientist
- Where the scientist was born, and where they grew up.
- What event in their life that impacted them to cause them to become astronomers.
- Why they are famous- Give information about their discoveries or contributions to the field of astronomy. Do not state that they are famous for discovering the sun, explain how they got there and why this is important to astronomy today.
