Introduction to Controlled Substances
Using the book Criminalistics (chapter 9, page 233) and/or the Internet, answer the following questions.
- What is a drug?
- Drugs can create two different types of dependence, psychological and physical. What is the difference between the two?
- What are the effects on the body between the two types of dependence?
- What are the major groups of controlled substances?
- For each of the groups explain the following:
- Possible dependencies
- The effects of the drug both psychologically and physically
- Specific examples or the drugs and brief description
- What you would look for at a crime scene to identify the drugs
- What the drug looks like in its various forms
- Forensically, how you would identify the drug
- For each of the groups explain the following:
- Give a brief summary of the current drug-control laws in the US

Write a 3 page typed paper (12 point font, single spaced) on the different types of tests that can be run on an individual that is suspected to have taken drugs (ex. Hair test) or a substance that is suspected of being a drug (Ex. how to test if a drug is cocaine, or just flour. TASTING IS NOT THE ANSWER). Explain what is being tested and how the substance is being tested for the drugs. Describe the pros and cons of testing for the drug in this way- Is it accurate? Is a large quantity needed? Do you get false positives? How much does it cost? etc.
